SYNOPSIS
Meet MacKensie Lee, Kirsten Collier, Brittany Witherspoon, Patsy
Pennington, and the narrator, Rebecca James. They are members of the
exclusive ChasteKeepers club, also known as CKs. All are sophomores at
Jefferson High School in the town of Jefferson, Ohio, population twenty-five
thousand and growing.
There are certain standards for CK membership. Number one, you must
believe in God; number two, you must take the oath of abstinence and
refrain from premarital sexual activities, drugs, alcohol, tobacco and crime;
and, number three, you must never divulge information to anyone about the
CKs. Absolutely no outsiders should know what goes on in the
ChasteKeepers’ meetings because sometimes they share personal family
matters with one another. The gathering provides a measure of therapy for
them to unload their issues on each other instead of keeping it bottled up
inside.
The CKs’ mission is to assist and encourage each other, uphold their credo,
and to be an example and inspiration to other girls. They joke, tease, and
have fun like teenagers do, but something serious happens to one of them
and she finds herself in deep trouble.
When MacKensie’s boyfriend pressures her for an intimate relationship, she
toys with temptation and hides her weaknesses instead of seeking direction
from God and support and encouragement from her friends, the trusted
CKs. Will MacKensie eventually listen through the ear in her heart or the
one in her head?
The ChasteKeepers devise a plan to expose MacKensie’s two-timing, heart-
breaking boyfriend, Reggie, by creating a private-eye character named
Hellyn Black. But when the gang begins to develop evidence on their
chaotic adventures, they uncover more than they expected.
Eventually, MacKensie realizes that she has to answer for her own actions
and face the consequences of her decisions.
With a touch of mystery, crime, suspense, romance, comedy and drama,
four unique teenagers with distinct personalities, pull together to help the
one that goes astray.

PROLOGUE
I was deeply into reading a great new mystery novel when the musical
ring startled me. It was to the tune of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart or
Tchaikovsky (I get ‘em mixed up). You know, the doom-sounding bass tune
that goes, da-da-da-dummmm! I contemplated whether to answer it and for
some reason decided I should. Grabbing the cell phone from my bed, I saw
that it was MacKensie calling me on her brother’s mobile phone.
I thought I knew everything there was to know about MacKensie but now
our friendship is slowly deteriorating. I don’t want it to, but circumstances
are calling for it. Just when you think you know someone, you find out
there's always that one thing they keep hidden.
“What’s up?” I answered, with an unusual edge to my voice, based on
what had happened when I last saw her.
“Meet me outside,” MacKensie stated without a greeting or salutation or
even her usual hey.
“I’m in front of your house,” she pushed forward with a sense of
urgency. Before disaster broke loose in her life, she used to be a happy-go-
lucky girl. But now she’s a bitter fifteen-year old fuddy duddy.
“Okay. I’ll be right out,” I dragged. I clicked the phone off and read
another paragraph of the private eye story prior to tossing it on the bed.
Before trotting down the stairs, I took a peek from the hall window to see if I
could spot MacKensie outside. Yup. There she was, sitting on the front
curb of our tree-lined street with her back against the huge oak tree. My
Mom loves that old tree with its dazzling, healthy leaves and thick beautiful
trunk. Pretty soon we’d say adios to the brisk autumn air and the cold,
breezy winds of winter would make its appearance. It always gives me a
warm, fuzzy feeling just to see fresh-fallen snow on the rooftops and stoops.
I thought it was strange for MacKensie to sit out in the open like that. But
then again, ever since Reggie came into her life, strange and unusual
things began to happen to her. Clearing my throat and swallowing the
lump it produced, I figured this was as good a time as any to tell her about
Hellyn Black. Just as I was nearing, MacKensie stood up, words rushing
from her lips.
“I didn’t mean to, but I was overtaken with anger,” MacKensie repeated
twice, staring into space.
“What are you talking about?” I thought she’d been given some kind of
trip drug ’cause she was acting peculiar—fidgety an’ all. Her eyes held a
strange, demented look.
“I should’ve listened to you. I should’ve believed you. You’re my best
friend and I thought you were jealous of Reggie and me, but I should’ve
known better. I was blinded by his wicked and deceitful heart. I’m so sorry,
Rebecca, for the way I’ve treated you and Pat, Kirsten and Brittany, too.
But especially you.” Her distressful words ran into each other.
“Slow down, Mac, slow down. “What’s going on?”
Her eyes couldn’t relax in one place. She had forgotten she was outside,
yelling some gibberish about cuts, slits and gashes. That made me look
closer at her face.
In a voice that quavered, her following statement poured out straight and
soft, yet full of pain and sorrow. “I stabbed Reggie,” she said. A tear broke
loose and was soon joined by many others. She pitched forward on her
knees as if she were pleading for her soul, howling ghoulish moans.
My eyes widened, both hands immediately sheltered my mouth, the tips
of my fingers shielded my nostrils. I swallowed a scream. Gasping, I
muffled, “Oh my gosh, MacKensie! Is he dead?! Did you kill him?!”
LITERARY AND
LEARNING
What if a student is expected to
read The ChasteKeepers series
even if reading is hard for her?
The cover catches her eye. She
picks up the book for a closer
look and opens it. The words
don’t look too long, the type is
big enough to follow easily, and
it is not too thick. The next thing
you know, she’s hooked! She
can’t put the book down—at
least not until she finishes the
chapter. She talks about it with
other girls and soon they’re
reading it too! She feels good
about it, except for one thing—
it's over and she wants more!
She can’t wait for the next
installment.
Reading gets easier every time
because she’s been practicing
reading skills without knowing it.
And, on top of everything else,
she’s learning how to make
good, healthy and responsible
decisions that pertain to at-risk
behaviors.
